Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the Ohio Senate, how legislation works, and how you can participate in the democratic process. Can't find what you're looking for? Contact your senator or reach out to the Senate office directly.

How do I find my senator by address?

Use the address lookup tool on our Members page to find your Ohio state senator. Enter your home address and you'll see your senator's name, district, contact information, and office hours. You can also browse the full directory or select your senator from the dropdown list.

How do I track a bill by bill number?

Visit the Legislation page and use the bill search tool. Enter the bill number (like SB 1 or HB 50) to see its current status, which committee it's assigned to, voting history, and amendments. You can also track multiple bills over time using My Ohio Legislature for ongoing updates.

How do I submit testimony to a committee?

Find the committee hearing schedule for the bill you care about, then register to testify before the deadline. You'll have a few minutes to speak in person, or you can submit written testimony. Contact the committee chair's office for registration details and to prepare your remarks.

What is a committee and why does it matter?

Committees are where senators debate bills in detail, hear from experts and constituents, and decide whether to recommend bills to the full Senate. Hundreds of bills are introduced each session, but only a fraction make it out of committee to the Senate floor. This is where public testimony has the most impact.

When does the Senate meet, and can I watch sessions?

The Senate typically meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 11:00 a.m., though the schedule varies by session. You can watch live streams on our website or in the video archive, visit the Senate Chamber in person during sessions, or tune in to The Ohio Channel for broadcasts. All sessions are open to the public.

What is "sine die" and what does reapportionment mean?

Sine die (Latin for "without day") is the end of a legislative session—when the Senate adjourns with no set date to return. Reapportionment is the process of redrawing Senate district boundaries every 10 years based on census data to ensure fair representation as Ohio's population changes. Both are key parts of how the Senate operates and serves all 88 counties.
